About the Course

The challenge facing our youth is great, but their potential is greater!

The Certificate in Positive Youth Development equips students with an understanding of the theoretical, empirical and experiential bases of the Positive Youth Development (PYD) model.

Positive Youth Development offers a pro-social, strength-based, and holistic approach to youth programs for promoting positive outcome for all youth. 

Course Objectives

  • Conceptualize adolescence from a positive youth development perspective
  • Become familiar with language, essential concepts and theories that direct the work with youth
  • Analyze interrelationships of community sectors and their effects on youth outcomes
  • Learn about varied roles, activities and responsibilities of youth development professionals

Who Should Attend

The curriculum benefits volunteer, early-career and mid-career professional youth development leaders in agencies, institutions, schools, nonprofits, and community organizations that serve youth.

Course Format

The delivery of this course will be online over 5 nights (3hrs per night) 7:00PM-10:00 PM EST via Zoom:
  • Day 1: Introduction to Positive Youth Development
  • Day 2: Applied adolescent development - youth voice, choice and engagement
  • Day 3: Mobilizing adults and communities for Positive Youth Development
  • Day 4: Applying PYD fundamentals to effective youth programming
  • Day 5: Core competencies for youth development leaders 

Certification Requirement

  • Attendance and participation
